Here’s a step-through-step guide for creating an outfit with a piece of clothing that you already own and adding your flair.
Stop taking yourself so seriously and wear what makes you feel good, it's all about having fun.
Pick out one article of clothing that catches your eye that day, and let that item be your starting point. A fun suggestion is picking out a piece that matches your nails, hairstyle, or makeup look.
Go with a vibe that you want to emit that specific day. Searching through Pinterest and TikTok can be a source of inspiration. I wouldn't categorize vibe the same as an aesthetic because an aesthetic is more stringent but a vibe is something that you come up with and feel inside depending on the day.
With the base of the outfit selected, you now have a general vibe going on for the rest of the pieces in your outfit. Make sure that you aren't just envisioning the base item but that you are thinking about the flow into a seamless outfit.
What You Picked
If you picked a pair of jeans/shorts:
Layer a pair of bloomers under so that it peeks out and creates more depth within the outfit then pair with a simple shirt that matches the bloomers
Pair it with a cool and funky belt(s) (TIP: Wear a necktie or a long necklace as a belt for added personality.)
Add ribbon to the belt loops to add a more fun vibe, can be through a belt or little bows can be tied around each loop
Cuff the bottom of the jeans to switch it up
Add a pair of tights or knee-high socks
If you picked a skirt:
Layer another skirt on top or underneath to create a flowy vibe
Safety pin the left, right, both, or middle of the skirt up to add some depth
Tie a scarf around the skirt to add more layers
Add a fun pair of tights
If you picked a t-shirt:
Tie the shirt sleeves with ribbon to add character
Layer a mesh shirt underneath to give it more personality
Cut the neck of the tee off to create an off-the-shoulder t-shirt that can be paired with a cute bralette or tank
Tuck your tee into your undershirt to add a layer
Throw a hoodie on top and have the bottom of the shirt sticking out
Pair with a statement jacket that accentuates the shirt design
If you picked a button-down:
Button only the top button and add a cute top underneath
Leave it open completely, and style it as a jacket
Button the entire top and style it as is
Fold it under to have a cropped look
If you picked a dress:
Throw on a pair of jeans underneath to be transported back to the early 2000s
Add a skirt underneath to create a fun dimension
Put a basic tee underneath to add layers to the dress
Tuck one side into your bottoms and leave the other out
If you picked a bag:
Add pins or charms onto the bag to show what you love
Sew, glue, or iron on patches
Tie ribbons onto the straps to match your outfit
If you picked a pair of shoes:
Replace the plain laces with ribbon
Add a cute pair of socks or leg warmers to make the shoes stand out (TIP: You can put two pairs of leg warmers on top of each other to bring in more color.)
Sew or iron on patches onto cloth shoes
If you picked an accessory:
Layer and stack necklaces to add depth
Stack rings all over your fingers, too many doesn't exist
Stack bracelets, tie ribbon or lace around your arm as an additional bracelet accessory
Pair a hat and glasses with each other because the silhouette highlights face features
Add chunky earrings to a basic outfit to make it stand out more
Use headbands, ribbons, or even glue jewels into your hair to draw out more personality to an outfit. (TIP: use eyelash glue to put jewels in your hair)
Layer and stack waist beads with cropped tees or low-rise bottoms
Congratulations, you have a fully styled, thought-out outfit with just pieces from inside your closet! Now with any piece that you picked in your closet, you can make it into an outfit that you love. Remember, there is no wrong answer when styling pieces together if you like it.That is all that matters. The most important part in all of this is to wear your outfit with confidence and own it because it's your creation.
