Winter is here, and with it brings the urge to craft, at least for me. SWAPS, or Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere, are a good way for me to create things without adding any more stuff to my room, since SWAPS are to be given away. These five winter themed SWAPS are good for trading with others, as well as being given away. I like to attach SWAPS to the handles of gift bags, as an added surprise J.

Winter Shapes:

This is probably the most versatile of all the SWAPS, since you can basically make anything you want to.

You will need:
  • Pony Beads (I used red, green, and white, but depending on the shape you want to make, you can use different colors)
  • Pipe cleaners (I used green, but once again, it depends on your shape)
  • Safety pins

Steps:

1. Lay out your materials.
2. String beads onto pipe cleaners, using the color scheme of the shape you’re making.
3. Twist pipe cleaners into desired shapes.
4. Pin a safety pin through one of the beads. You’re done!

Tiny Penguin:

This tiny penguin is a fun craft to make, and doesn’t necessarily have to be made into a SWAP. If you forgo the safety pin in the last step, you have a cute bird that can sit on your desk (That’s where mine is right now!).

You will need:
  • Cylinder-shaped bottle caps (I got mine from a shampoo bottle)
  • Black paint
  • Yellow and white construction paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Hot glue
  • Safety pins

 Steps:

1. Lay out your materials.
2. If it isn’t already, paint the cap black.
3. Cut white and yellow paper into the following shapes:
4. Use glue to fasten shapes to cap.
5. Add googly eyes and a safety pin with glue. You’re done!

Puzzle Snowflake:

Finally, something to do with all those puzzle pieces that don’t match! This was especially fun to make for me, since I have a baggy of lost puzzle pieces I’ve been trying to use for years.

You will need:
  • Old puzzle pieces
  • White paint
  • Hot glue
  • Safety pins

Steps:

1. Lay out your materials.
2. Paint all puzzle pieces white.
3. Glue the pieces so they overlap in a snowflake shape.
4. Add a safety pin to the back with glue. You’re done!

Mini Snowman:

This snowman needs no glue to complete. Some of the pipe cleaner steps can be tricky on this one, since it’s such a small scale, so if you’re having trouble, I recommend a pair of pliers.

You will need:
  • White pony beads
  • Black and red pipe cleaners
  • Black marker
  • Safety pins

 Steps:

1. Lay out your materials.
2. Open safety pin, and put three beads on.
3. Close safety pin, cut small pieces of red and black pipe cleaner, and twist them into a hat and scarf.
4. Draw a face with black marker. You’re done!

Holly:

Holly is a classic winter image, and this SWAP captures its likeness very well.

You will need:
  • Small red pom poms
  • Green felt
  • Ribbon (Green or red matches the best)
  • Hot glue
  • Safety pins

Steps:
1. Lay out your materials.
2. Cut out leaf shapes from green felt
3. Glue the pom poms to the felt to create your own holly.
4. Glue ribbon to back, and put safety pin through ribbon. You’re done!
